Naxos marbles are characterized by their crystalline texture, while their colouring ranges from dark grey to very white. The whiter the marble, the more expensive it is considered, as is generally the case with all marbles. It is a calcareous marble, used in sculpture, in the construction of monuments and as a decorative material in the building industry (covering floors, walls, bathrooms, etc.). Its hardness ranges from 3 to 4, depending on its composition, while its fracture is irregular and its specific gravity ranges from 1,8 to 2,85. Naxos marble is extracted from the quarries of Apollo, where many traces of ancient workings are still preserved.
